There is no right answer or magic page number when determining how long your resume should be. Much depends on your individual circumstances and experience. Additionally, the various positions you are applying for may require varying lengths.
If your resume is too long, you may wish to go over your job description and duties to streamline the text. Hiring managers often do not spend a great deal of time examining resumes, and may overlook something important if it’s buried between “filler” words and other unnecessary text.
Your resume should always be concise – getting to the point while using the fewest possible words. Often, people tend to use bullet points to emphasis their duties, and we here at Innovative Resume agree!
The length of your resume should reflect your experience and education.
Take the below examples:
Jason, a recent graduate with a Bachelor’s in Business is looking for his first ‘real’ job. He interned with a local company throughout college but has never held a salary job. Additionally, he worked as an hourly employee at a local grocery store during the summer months when he returned home to his family.
An appropriate length for Jason’s resume is a single page. There is no reason it should be longer, as he doesn’t have much relevant experience. Further, it may not even be necessary to include Jason’s job at the grocery store if he determines it not to be relevant to his career path. Jason will want to highlight his educational background and internship experience.
Alternatively, Robert is a seasoned Sales Manager with over 20 years of relevant work experience. His resume would likely carry over to a second page depending on the number of jobs and positions he held during the past twenty years. While Robert’s resume will be longer than one page, he should be vigilant not to make it too long.
